My first three LFR..wait..four! (Because I got in a game on Wednesday..) slots at GenCon this year were perfect.Seriously! They were great. I played the entire Calimshan series, and on Wednesday we squeezed in Heart of the Desert.
I can’t say enough good things about those DMs. They are making the campaign great, and know what they are doing.
The last one- Spec 3-3, run by a Dm that was pulled in to make the table.. and this guy absolutely sucked. He was slow, overly tactical, completely tied to reading out the boxed text and misunderstanding most of it, and paying waayy too much attention to the chess-gamization of the combat encounters. and we never finished the adventure.Once again- this isn’t about the rules- these DMs know the rules. He just plain sucked ass.
Look, the DM has more pieces to move then the other players, and this guy was also brought in cold (had not prepared the adventure), but still, this is no excuse. Half of the rest of the table was brand new to LFR (so.. thanks for an absolutely awful experience), and we had all paid money for tickets. I could have done better. I will do better. I’m going back to volunteering, I think. If I ever get this DM again, I’m skipping the table and encouraging the rest of the table to go as well. We’ve worked too hard to be served like this.
Kicker: This was the same sucky DM I had for Origins that made me cancel all of my remaining LFR slots. As before, he didn’t finish it then, either.
Literally- this guy has never managed to finish DMing an adventure in time that I know of.
