This is the cover of the John Carter collection I have (strangely, it is a Dark Horse collection with the “Marvel” logo removed, but inside it’s all still Marvel).
I want to do a Sword and Planet campaign myself, but not one based on any particular series.I have a bunch of notes, but no organized thoughts just yet.
- It’s kind of important for me to establish that the first chapter or leg of the campaign involves crash-landing onto an isolated planet from a starfaring vehicle of some kind. Like the first season of Lost. The crashlanding will involve around 200+ survivors. So subsequent characters are also drawn from the survivor group.
- Shipwrecked on an isolated “wild planet” the players initially focus on rescue
- In essence, the remainder of the crash-group and the ships wreckage becomes the “starting village”
- The PCs are humans only. And actually start out without any designated class (and very little background). They are made into PCs via an encounter with a mystical alien temple or shrine (at which point they can choose either a martial or psionic class). Again, my influence is Lost.
- magical items are going to be reskinned as tech and alien artifacts. Some gamma world influence as well. A limited use raygun or medkit could be waaay out of spec for lowbie characters but will eventually break or run out of charges, so I’m fine with supplying them.

- not concerned with balance or challenge ratings so much, other than within a loose set of parameters. Some encounters will be too tough to fight, and many will be simple enough not to fight.
- Monsters recast as aliens. Thri-kreen for example. Warforged will be an abandoned automaton race with a brand-new look.
- Campaign secrets and surprises. A “second group of survivors” might be a subplot, as well as encounters with other starfaring races, (possible reveal that the planet isn’t as isolated as thought..).
- Retro-Raygun and atomic-kitsch style to everything.
- First major quest is a “season”, that once completed, changes the parameters of the campaign.
